What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is first and foremost the study of the skin, hair, and nails. We treat skin conditions on patients of any age with a wide range of options. Common conditions we treat are:

As the largest organ in the body and our body’s first line of defense against bacteria, irritants and viruses, skin is one of the most important things you can take care of. Unfortunately, it is something people don’t think about until it hurts. We want to help you learn to take care of your skin and promote overall lifetime health.

What Can I Do to Take Care of my Skin?

Protect it. Use sunblock every day. Even in the wintertime and even when it’s overcast, UV rays reach your skin. Using SPF 30 will block 98% of UV rays. This will help you prevent skin cancer and premature aging.

Moisturize it. As a country, Americans do not drink enough water and the first thing to suffer is our skin. Keeping your skin hydrated with lotions is important to keeping the skin healthy and strong, which will help you look younger, prevent injury, and heal faster when injury occurs. However, not all lotions are created equal. Dr. Yeoman recommends Dove for Sensitive Skin®, Cetaphil Soap or Vanicream in the shower. For lotions, we recommend something high quality like Aveeno® or Ponds®. Look for things that are fragrance-free and alcohol-free. Good lotion should not feel runny or watery, but should be thick and creamy.

Here are some good skin care tips:

  • Use a new towel every night. Reusing the same towel will keep old bacteria on your skin and likely introduce mildew.
  • When you get out of the shower, pat down with a clean towel and apply lotion/moisturizer while the skin is still damp.
  • Don’t let water sit on the skin. Men especially have trouble with this. Allowing water to sit on the skin or get stuck in body hair can cause problems and rashes. Either pat down with a clean towel or try using a blow dryer to dry running water off the skin.
  • Wash your face morning and night with a gentle cleanser. Avoid cleansers that contain alcohol and pat your face dry with a clean, dry cloth. While skin is still damp, this is the time to apply facial moisturizers. Many facial moisturizers and aftershaves have SPF.
